"Just fight a little longer my friend; it’s all worth it in the end.” Words of wisdom from Brittany Moirano, age 27, who recently received her High School Equivalency Diploma from the Kokomo Area Career Center.
Moirano claims, “I dropped out senior year (2012). I literally let years pass me by. I was distracted and on the wrong path, and now looking back, I’m humbled by that because I know the struggle, the tears, and the pain I went through to get to where I am today. I have never been ashamed to tell people my struggles because they made me stronger and better. I don’t put on fake fronts. Life is hard. A lot of us didn’t have the proper guidance or help or even a role model during our school years to motivate us. But it’s up to us to break those cycles and push forward regardless. I’m giving my boys a mother they can be proud of and look up to in every way.”
Working from home full-time, Moirano found working and going to school difficult at times but gives credit to a strong support system and flexible hours for completing the program and graduating. “Sometimes all it takes is the right people behind you supporting and pushing you through it. I am so thankful—I never thought I’d see myself in a cap and gown. After nine years, I started classes May 17th, I took the test a couple weeks later, and passed on my first try. One try was all it took. I am so proud of myself. I did it for my boys. If their momma did it, so can they.”
“Thank you to my family (Laurie, Shelby, Nikol), my man Deshawn, and the teachers at the Career Center who pushed me every day. Now here’s to becoming a real estate agent!!! Follow your dreams. Stop letting fear and lack of motivation tell you that you can’t be someone great.” Teacher Janet Geier-Moriarty asserts, “Brittany was a joy to have in class. Her energy, positivity, and focus in preparing for the HSE was inspiring; those qualities will make her successful in the field of real estate or whatever profession she chooses. I have no doubt.”
