Motivated by her children, Kayla Coburn started Adult Education classes at the Kokomo Area Career Center in September of 2019 to earn her HSE (High School Equivalency). As a single mother of four children (ages 19, 13, 9 and 2) Coburn wanted to show her children that it’s never too late to start again, and that all things are possible, even when the odds are against you. Coburn had her first child at a young age which prevented her from getting her diploma the traditional way. Her child suffered from epilepsy and was severely autistic. “I had no help from family or friends, so I became a stay at home mom.”
Coburn worked full-time at the Baymont Inn while attending classes. She did find it difficult to get off work and go to class because she was tired and had children to go home and tend. However, she made it work. “I absolutely loved this program and it fit my work and home life schedule. There was no judgement whatsoever. The ladies were very supportive and caring and made me feel like I could do anything,” according to Coburn.
On Coburn’s first attempt at the HSE, she passed writing, reading, science, and social studies. Math was her point of struggle. She took the math HSE three times. According to program director Janet Geier-Moriarty, “Kayla did everything she was instructed to do. She kept a positive attitude throughout the process even when she encountered failure. She didn’t quit or give up. She was a model student and her efforts paid off. We’re all very proud of her!” Coburn credits Janet Geier-Moriarty and Alice Guest’s supportiveness, flexibility, and encouragement for her success.
Coburn commented, “The best advice I could give someone is don’t ever think it’s too late. You can start anytime. With willpower you can accomplish anything.” Coburn has plans to attend college and start a career that fits her family.
